  • White Sapote also known as Mexican Apple is a must have fruit tree to add to your collection!. No, this is completely different from Sapodilla(Chiku), they're not even related so don't get them confused. This fruit is out of this world, it tastes like a sweeter sweet potatoe and it's so easy to grow it makes no sense why you don't already have one :).

  • White Sapote Growing Tips:

  • Best time to plant: Anytime night temperatures are at least 50F and expected to rise in the next month or so. This is going to be mid to late spring for most people.

  • Sun: Full sun anywhere in the U.S. It doesn't grow well in the shade.

  • Winter: Will tolerate light frost, cold hardy to low 20F's !!!. If you're in zone below 9, you may need to protect it in the winter.

  • Root system: Deep roots.

  • Growth structure: Upright structure. It may grow up to 15-20ft.

  • Pollination: Self-pollination (you only need 1 tree to get fruit).

  • Fruiting: This tree flowers in the spring and fruits ripen sometime in the Fall.

  • Watering: Shallow water first season in ground. As the tree gets older, deep water. Do let soil dry somewhat in between watering. Overwatering takes months to kill your plant, letting your tree go dry in full sun, its first summer in ground, one afternoon is all it takes to kill it. Don't be afraid to water.

  • Fertilization: In containers, any slow release fertilizer will work. In ground, compost and mulch is all you will ever need. No special fertilizers needed.

  • Container Grown: Surprisingly this tree will do ok in a pot long term with some maintenance. Only up-pot when needed and never up-pot from small into a huge pot. Your tree will NOT grow faster simply because you put it in a bigger pot.

  • Personal Growing Tip: Once you plant this tree in ground, no top growth is normal until the tree roots in ground. The rooting process can take 1 year+ depending on your local night temperatures. Hot=It Grows faster, Cold=It grows slower.
